Android 2.3.4 Comes to Nexus One--Without Google Talk Voice Chat

Attention, Nexus One owners: the latest variant of Gingerbread is here! But don't get too excited as this "special" Nexus One version of Android doesn't deliver all the digital goodies that other handsets are getting.

Those with the "original Google handset" will find that their 2.3.4 update is sadly lacking one much-talked-about new Gingerbread feature: video calling. Google Talk video (and voice) calling was first introduced to the Nexus S last month, and now Android 2.3.4 has arrived for the Nexus One, sans video chat functionality, as noted by the guys over at the XDA-Developers forum.

The lack of video chat functionality for the Nexus One is hardly surprising--the device doesn't have a front-facing camera, after all (but why not allow video calls using the the rear-facing camera?). But the more important omission may be the lack of voice chat support in the Google Talk update. Doh!

Nexus One owners can instead look forward to an update comprising mainly of exciting bug fixes! Yipee! If you can't wait for those bugs to be squashed you can grab the 2.3.4 update for the Nexus one here (direct ZIP download), with instructions on how to install it manually detailed here. Alternatively the update will be being pushed out over-the-air real soon.
