Features:
Business Calendar is a very solid calendar replacement app. It has all the standard views (month, agenda, day and event view) and features, along with the ability to customize things like whether or not you want the weekend days colored, and if so, what color do you want them to be.
One cool feature, and I don’t understand why Google hasn’t implemented this into their Android Calendar app, is drag & drop functionality… why they have it in desktop Google Calendars. If you’re like myself, sometimes you create an entry on the device and put in the wrong day or time, or the meeting gets pushed, etc. drag & drop allows you to easily longpress, drag then drop to the date/time you desire. Just be sure to toggle is on from the menu settings, else it’s locked by default to avoid unwanted moving of items.
When editing a calendar entry, a thin strip on the right appears with nearby entries which is helpful when scheduling event and not booking over something (how many of us have done that ans realized after the fact, thus resulting in changing the entry). Another nifty feature allows you to pinch and zoom the calendar versus pressing Menu and choosing your view type. Lastly, I like the feature to toggle your calendars, for those of us that have several Google Calendar synced to one device. My gripe there is, it is rather small near the bottom just above the day slider. Underlined toggles that calendar on, not underlined toggles it off.
My one and only complaint is that in the widget to scroll you have to press a button at the bottom, rather than just being able to touch the screen and scroll it. If that was changed, it just might be the best calendar app out there.
Tips:
Please do not move the application to the SD Card if you want to use the widgets (general limitation of the Android operating system)!
The app depends on the reminders of the stock calendar application please make sure you have not disabled them if you want to get alarm messages for your events!
Please notice that the application will now work with the Motorola Xoom but is not optimized for the high screen resolution of that device.
Usefulness:
I’m a major calendar user, so this is a very useful app category in general… they keep you organized and productive. This one, in particular, is very powerful, so if you’re also a calendar junkie, this is a great one to check out.
Ease of Use:
It is very easy to pick up and start using, especially if you’ve used other calendar apps in the past. Poking around the app or reading this review offers the best way to learn navigational nuances; such as Pinch to Zoom, toggling day span & calendars, or mastering Monthly view by tapping a day and scrolling multiple entries.
Frequently Used:
This depends on your calendar usage. If you’re a junkie, as I said above, you’ll be using this all day every day, especially with the widget.
Interface:
Business Calendar both shines and hides in the same respect when it comes to displaying a lot of calendar information on the smartphone screen. On one hand it’s great at displaying so much information, plus learning how to navigate nuanced features are easy to learn… which can increase your productivity greatly. However, at times it seems too cluttered, thus, making for more clicks to drill down to the calendar information you want. For me, the agenda widget is how I ultimately judge a calendar since that’s what I use the most, and this one is incredibly solid and easy to use.
