Drag Racing Android Game Review

I have listed Drag Racing as one of my favourite games last month and I thought I would review it here so that you will see why I liked this game. Drag Racing is a side by side 2D racing game. I might even say that it is not even a racing game because you do not steer the car. It is more like a timing game where you have to time your actions at those exact moments to reach maximum speed.

When you first launch this game, you are greeted with simple but high quality graphics. You have some cash to spend and you start off by buying your first car. There are more than 40 different cars available in the game. I started with a Clio because I previously owned one in real life. There are 3 important properties of the cars. Power, weight and grip. After you pick up your first car you hit the tracks and start racing. There are 2 different lengths of tracks, 1/4 and 1/2 mile, and there are different levels of opponents. As you beat your opponents you start making some money and earn some reputation. You can use the money and reputation points to upgrade your car or buy newer cars. You can make your ride go much faster by upgrading the engine, the tires, the turbo system, adding nitrous boost or removing unnecessary weight.

The game play is simple. You hit the gas to let everybody know that you are ready to go. The lady raises the start flag and you start pushing the gas pedal to get a good start. Once the flag goes down, the action begins. Your engine quickly revs past 7k RPM and you start changing gears. This is where the art of the game lies. You have the change the gears with perfect timing to beat your opponents. Here are some useful tips taken from the game description:

1. Racing
- Blue/green lights on dashboard will help you launch and shift at the right time
- If there is too much wheelspin, you are not going anywhere
- Once you learn how to drive properly, ignore the lights and find your own winning strategy
- Nitrous is more effective on underpowered cars with lots of grip. Timing is crucial!

2. Cars and upgrades
- Test drive before you buy a car!
- The more your car costs, the tougher opposition you’ll face both offline and online
- Upgrades count towards increasing car cost/level, while tuning doesn’t
- Keep your car cost just under your level cap to get an advantage
- Adjusting gear ratios (Garage -> Upgrade -> Tune) is costly, but lets you achieve times that are impossible on stock settings

What I have found out while playing the game is that changing the gear at the perfect time is not enough to win all races. I have looked around the net a little and found some strategies by other player. Some racers suggest directly going to 3rd gear and using nitrous here, then again shifting gears early towards the 5k RPM mark. There is a nice discussion going on in the androidforums.com. Take a look at what people are saying there and join the conversation with your own strategies.

This game does many things right. It has online multiplayer where you race against other players, it has simple but addictive gameplay, it rewards different strategies and best of all it is free. The developer also points out that there will be some very good additions coming to the game, like more cars (and even bikes), car customizations and leaderboards.

Drag Racing has been downloaded more than a million times. It has been reviewed by almost 37.000 players and has ana average rating of almost 4.6. I strongly recommend you download this fantastic android racing game and give it a try.
